A stylised 3D football game built around direct controls, quick matches, distinctive players, and the feel of the football games that defined the late 1990s and early 2000s.
My first attempt at creating a 3D game was back in 2016. Nearly ten years later, I am returning to 3D with Virtual Football Legacy.
The goal is not to create another modern football simulator. Virtual Football Legacy is being built around the feeling of the football games I grew up playing; straightforward controls, quick matches, distinctive players, and the atmosphere of late-1990s and early-2000s football games.
I am taking that inspiration and building something of my own: a stylised 3D football game with a retro presentation, original teams and players, and gameplay designed to be easy to pick up while still rewarding timing and control.
Development is still at an early stage, and this page will follow the project as it evolves from prototypes into the finished game.
Short development videos documenting gameplay, animation, controls, AI, match systems, presentation, and other milestones as Virtual Football Legacy develops.
A full-match progress update showing the current state of VFL, with improved AI, goalkeeping, passing, shooting, set pieces, offsides, player reactions, camera work, match presentation and early commentary systems working together.
These images are intended to show the target presentation and UI direction. They represent work in progress and may change as the game develops.
The current work is focused on getting the core football feel right before expanding into the larger game.
Run cycles, passing, shooting, tackling, heading, footedness, and readable retro-style character motion.
Positioning, dives, catches, pickups, throws, saves, and hand-specific interactions around the ball.
Building a simple responsive control scheme and testing the project with different controller types.
Developing the low-poly player style, textures, stadium presentation, UI, sound, and the overall retro football atmosphere.
